Pomegranate and training
In this investigation
Keep the fruit decision small
I mentioned pomegranate as a possible fruit change, while trying to keep food volume manageable. It remains a preference to explore, not a confirmed addition to my log. The fruit substitution investigation and purified urolithin A investigation cover separate questions.
Longer running in some tests
In a randomized crossover trial, 19 active young adults took 1,000 mg of a pomegranate extract or placebo 30 minutes before three treadmill runs to exhaustion. Running lasted longer at 90% and 100% of peak velocity, but not 110%; modeled critical velocity also did not significantly improve. Numerous outcomes were tested without a reported correction across the entire set. This is an acute extract result, not proof of improved race times, training adaptation or an equivalent effect from arils. Supplement companies funded the study alongside NIH support. Trexler et al., 2014
Blood flow and performance differ
A related crossover trial tested 1,000 mg of extract in 19 resistance-trained young adults, using ten six-second cycling sprints and one bench-press and leg-press set to fatigue. Overall sprint power and lifting repetitions did not significantly improve. Selected sprint confidence intervals favored extract despite null treatment and interaction tests; several vessel-diameter measures improved. Calling this a general performance improvement would select the favorable comparisons. Its sample-size calculation concerned vessel diameter. NIH supported the work, a manufacturer donated extract, and another supplement company encapsulated and blinded it. Roelofs et al., 2017
A marker can change without function
A 2025 report analyzed 78 of 86 randomized older adults; 76 completed twelve weeks of 740 mg/day extract versus placebo. Grip, walking, chair-rise and balance results did not significantly improve. Physical function was secondary to an inflammatory-marker primary outcome. The same registered cohort had a reported IL-6 difference; that is not replication or better mobility. Their baseline age tables disagree. Habitual diet and activity continued; the manufacturer funder reported no design or interpretation role. Current registration predates enrollment; history remains uninspected. Function report, same-cohort marker report
Recent juice recovery was not superior
In 2026, 14 collegiate male volleyball players completed a blinded crossover: one litre of juice before 200 weighted jumps versus a placebo containing non-nutritive sweeteners. Energy matching was not reported. Group comparisons found no superior functional, knee-strength or soreness recovery. Selected changes crossed a threshold based on between-person baseline variation; some reported responder percentages conflict with the table. One exposure per condition cannot establish reproducible individual treatment effects. The seven-day washout also cannot exclude a repeated-bout effect. No funding was reported. Rezaei et al., 2026
What this changes here
Pomegranate can remain an optional fruit rotation. These trials do not establish juice or capsules as necessary, or as treatment for my shoulder. No new purchase or portion has been adopted.
